I am a stylist new to the Colorado Springs area working for an elite Salon. In order to work on the floor I am required to bring in models to showcase my work.
The "model" doesn't HAVE to be a professional model, so if you know someone, pass this message along. (Check out my photos for some of my work)

Neglected Nails

All too often do I see this sight for sore eyes. Women neglect their darkly polished fingers until they are chipped beyond recognition.

While I too have been guilty of this faux pas, it is hard to look put together with battered fingers. You may think that this is non-sense, but you could put the cutest sundress on and still look unkept with that hideously chipped purple polish as you're sipping your high tea in front of your best client.

If you are unable to maintain your fingers here are a few alternatives:

1) Next time instead of colored polish use a clear coat or buff in shine with a multi-sided buffer.

2) Instead of dark polish go for a baby pink or nude. This looks very classy, is easy to do yourself, and the flaws are A LOT less noticeable.

3) If you are a professional who is expected to look your best, go fake. This may not sound appealing, but it is lower maintenance than polishing your own nails up to 3 times a week. Acrylics or Gels stay in perfect shape for 2 whole weeks before you will need another fill. Plus someone else can do the dirty work for you! (Be sure to ask around for a clean salon that cares for their clients. Some of those quick nail shops can destroy your nails by filing too far.)

I HAVE SUCCESSFULLY MADE THE MOVE TO COLORADO SPRINGS! It was necessary to post in the capitals because of how thrilled I am to officially be completely moved in and now settled. Boy how I've missed my laptop... I can't believe how dependent I've become.

As with all of my posts, I think its time to showcase another wonder of the beauty industry:

Have you heard of Keratin? I am in love with this new technology! It is a RELAXER without invasive, intrusive chemicals. It uses the protein bond :ahem: Keratin , which is the same protein your hair is naturally made of, therefore your making your hair healthier with each treatment. Your stylist infuses your hair with the protein which will relax your curl/completely straighten (depending on your natural curl). Beware that this process takes time and is costly, BUT is TOTALLY WORTH IT. I have a slight wave to my hair, but being a stylist I wanted to be sure that this technology really held up to all of its benefits, so I HAD to get it myself. Sure enough, this product cuts your blow dry time in half! (sometimes more), improves manageability, decreases frizz by 95%! , and is just too good to be true. Although services can range from $180-$500, you won't need another Keratin treatment for 3-6 months, so it balances out in the end if you consider how often color needs to be refreshed.

OH! That's the other great thing! You can color your hair with whatever chemical you wish! For those who are used to using those ICKY straightening, stinky chemicals, you are also used to being very cautious of ammonia based colors. Not true anymore with Keratin! You just have to be sure you get your color before the Keratin every time you go for your relaxing service.

One more thing, the chemical smells a bit like coconut, which is a lot better than the rotten eggs the heavy duty chemicals offer.

Toni&Guy Mourns the Loss of Guy Mascolo

Obituary - Guy Mascolo, February 29, 1944 – May 6, 2009

It is with deep sadness that the family of Guy Mascolo has announced the devastating news that Guy passed away on May 6th 2009 after suffering a massive heart attack at his home in Dallas.

Guy Mascolo, together with his brother Toni was the founder of TONI&GUY. Their globally renowned hairdressing company was launched in Clapham in South London in 1963 when the brothers were still in their late teens. The sons of Francesco and Maria Mascolo, the brothers learned their hairdressing skills from their father, himself a respected hairdresser.

In the mid-1950s the family immigrated to the UK from their home in Scafarti, a small town situated a few miles from Pompeii in the Campania region of Southern Italy. Guy (whose birth name was Gaetano), and Toni (whose name is actually Giuseppe), were the eldest of 5 sons. Bruno and Anthony Mascolo subsequently joined their brothers in the business while the 5th brother, Andrea joined the American arm of the family business during the 1980s where he continues to work.

The brothers had tremendous vision and energy and their particular skill of dressing hair, created with the amazing flair that is so typically Italian, was an attractive option to the geometric hairstyles of the late 1960s. By the mid-70s the brothers had opened their first salon in central London, on Davies Street, Mayfair and were receiving coverage in glossy magazines. At the same time they started participating in hairdressing shows that took them all over the world. During the late 70s and early 80s Toni&Guy opened further shops in Covent Garden and Sloane Square and also opened a hairdressing Academy in central London. They also launched their own product line: TIGI.

In 1983 Guy Mascolo and Bruno Mascolo moved to Dallas in the USA where they opened salons in the fast expanding shopping mall business and also started to grow their professional product line. Toni and Anthony Mascolo remained in the UK, where Anthony grew the education and creative side of the TONI&GUY and Toni developed a franchise operation that has now expanded into a highly successful global operation.

8 years ago Toni, Guy, Bruno and Anthony Mascolo demerged their business. Toni Mascolo and his children Sacha and Christian retained ownership of the TONI&GUY operation worldwide, (excluding the USA,) whilst Guy, Bruno and Anthony Mascolo took global ownership of TIGI and TONI&GUY USA, of which Guy was Chairman.

Guy Mascolo was highly respected in the world of hairdressing. A tremendously popular and generous character he was loved by everyone who met him and had an enormous amount of compassion. A quality the Italians describe as ‘simpatico’. He was a huge family man, with 2 sons from his first marriage, Guy Junior and Zak Mascolo, (who is the Creative Director of TONI&GUY New York,) and 2 daughters (Emanuella and Zara) by his second marriage to Flora Mascolo).

Guy was a keen sportsman with a passion for football and a keen supporter of Chelsea. He was also a talented musician. Guy was also a brilliant guitarist who over the years both wrote and produced music for himself and others. He was also a very good artist, and often sold his paintings to raise money for charities. Another of his many talents was cooking. Anyone who was fortunate enough to sample Guy’s ‘sugo Napoletano’ would agree it was the best they had ever tasted.

With such a passion for life it is a cruel fate that Guy has been taken from us at a point in his life when he had so much to live for and enjoy.
But most of all Guy Mascolo was known by all as a beautiful man and that is how he will be remembered.

Beach Hair

One of my girls just recently made a comment about how much she loves "beach hair." I told her I used to use the John Frieda stuff, but that was years ago. After messing around with different products, I happened upon one that offered me the most equivalent texture. While you can mess with certain scrunching gels or even hairspray, I found that TiGi's Bed Head's Foxy Curls Hi-Def Curl Spray works best. The back reads, "Upgrade your curls to HD! Get highly defined, frizz-free, seperated curls. Spray in wet hair and style or in dry hair to touch up your curls."

While I love it just as directed, I found if I dry my hair product free (or with a heat defender if I use a blow dryer) and then spray in the Hi-Def Curl spray, it gives that slightly messy, care-free, fresh from the beach effect. Love it. Play with it. Remember to purchase professional products from a professional.

Let's Clear the Hair

Clear Gloss, Clear Gloss, Clear Gloss!!!

I love this stuff! Next time you are in to see your stylist ask her to please tack this on to your service (if she doesn’t already), or call ahead and book it on since it does take roughly 20 minutes to process.

Natural Hair: this stuff will enhance your natural shade and give your hair a healthy glow/sheen if you feel your hair has been looking a bit dull/drab these days. (and it can last 4-6 weeks!)

Colored Hair: Follow your color service with a clear gloss to prolong color. Putting the clear gloss over your color is kind of like putting the top coat on your fresh nail polish. It will protect the color and seal the hair cuticle making it much more difficult to fade. **Added tip: If you are especially having trouble with fading (sometimes due to overly porous/damaged hair) use the clear gloss, blow dry, and then make sure you have your stylist flat iron your hair. Make sure she uses a heat defender too. Flat ironing done right will seal the cuticle even more and help hold in those color molecules. Avoid washing for 48 hours from service, don’t shampoo everyday, and use lukewarm to cool water when you do shampoo (hot water will cause the cuticle to expand). Use only color safe products, and buy professional.

Between Colors: You can also use the clear gloss midway between one color application until the next. If you feel your color starts to lose its shine before you actually need to color again, you can throw this on top to keep the color looking fresh.

Seriously, this stuff has done wonders for my own hair! Now I can’t go without it!

Skin Types

Now I know there are some that might find this post a little silly and unnecessary, but after speaking with a few individuals, I discovered there are some that are unsure of the different skin types and where exactly they fit in.

Normal- I swear it’s the rarest form, although it is called “normal.” This skin type really has nothing to complain about. On most days there is not a problem with oil or dryness.

Dry- Flaky, always dry, never enough moisturizer. Sometimes can be a symptom of a thyroid disorder.

Oily- Enough said. Regular breakouts.

Sensitive- usually needs to use hypoallergenic products. Reacts poorly to those that aren’t. (Redness, burning, hives, etc.)

Combination- The skin type with the most confusion. Combination is the most common skin type. This skin type is oily (usually in the ‘T’ Zone) with a few dry patches all at the same time.

The reason I thought it necessary to review was because I found some women to be confused with the definitions of the Normal and Combination skin types.

For those of you who are not aware, my gorgeous sister/best friend is an esthetician in Hawaii. She throws all sorts of skin care goodies and tid bits my way. Ever since I received the Dermalogica skin care line from her for Christmas, I can not stop RAVING about it. I have tried other professional products (i.e. Aveda’s skin care, Juice Beauty, Proactiv, etc.), but none can even come close to Dermalogica. This stuff is expensive, but I think a fresh, beautiful face is worth it!

Now, if you can’t afford the price, there is another skin care line I discovered and absolutely loved still more than the other aforementioned lines. It still can’t beat Dermalogica, though. :)

It is called Alba Botanica, and it was their Hawaiian line that I used. I found it at my local drugstore and it has things like pineapple enzymes, aloe, jojoba, papaya enzymes, etc. I felt like I was using professional products at a drugstore price. I purchased the Cleanser, Toner, Face Cream, and Scrub. I loved, loved, loved everything, but the scrub wasn’t as scrubby as I would like it to have been.

So there you have it. My skin care Oscar goes to Dermalogica, with Alba Botanica as it’s runner up. ;)

This Season's Fashion Do's

I thought I would share my latest fashion trends I have stumbled upon over the past few days.

Makeup:

Bright Colors!! I am so excited about this! I love this look. To make your brights stand out even more, start with a white base. The colors will really pop against a blank canvas. You can use this trick with both your shadows and your nail polish (i.e. white base coat). While these colors are tons of fun, it’s not ultra professional, so use your judgement. Also, reserve the blue and purple shadows for evening wear. These colors tend to be very powerful even in the brights.
More specifically, high intensity blues and greens are making a statement in the magazines these days. Along with different shades of gold and copper. Same rules as above apply for these emeralds and ceruleans, but the golds and coppers are day time and work friendly.

Clothing

Trousers. I would suggest pairing the masculine slacks with a feminine blouse or girly accessories.
The basic Tee. No ridiculous phrases. Images yes. Nothing that says your hair color is better than some one else’s, or you other ride is someone else’s mom. Those just make you sound trashy, and are not the latest trend these days. The basic tee is being paired with vests and heels, and in the right fit looks ultra sexy without being too showy.
Sequin dresses and tops for evening/club-wear. With something this sexy though, don’t over do it. Since sequins can be excessive on their own, the rest of your outfit should be relatively tame with simplistic accessories.
Chucks. Though, I feel like they have never truly left the scene, they are definitely making a come back these days. They would look great paired with the aforementioned black trousers, white tee, black vest + very feminine accessories (i.e. floral purse, noticeable jewelry, etc.)

Overworking the hair DOES EXIST!! This can lead to something called Traction Alopecia!! EEK! A friend once told me that her niece could not stop the bad habit of TIGHTLY twirling a certain spot of her hair habitually. Because she was pulling and tugging on those hairs consistently, she created a BALD SPOT!! NOT FUN!

While 100 brush strokes or scalp massages are not bad, (no sir, not one bit, rather enjoyable I might add) frequent tugging and pulling, or constant irritation (not necessarily good feelings) can cause some unpleasant results.

Soooo....as with other great things in life: keep it in moderation!

100 Strokes a Day

I’m sure every girl has heard the advice: 100 brush strokes a day keeps your hair healthy/makes it grow faster.

The truth behind this: Running the brush over your scalp is what’s really helping your hair. With every stroke, you’re increasing blood circulation, which in turn stimulates the hair follicles. When the hair follicles are stimulated on a more frequent basis, it encourages growth. Although the average hair growth is 1/2 inch per month, by practicing this everyday or every other day, you could see a gradual increase in your hair’s development.

Liner Woe

If your eyeliner is too stiff, don't toss it! Use your blowdryer to

heat the pencil up for a couple of seconds. This will make the liner

soft and easy to glide. Be careful not to get it too hot (then it will

be toooooo soft). No worries...letting it cool will bring the pencil

back to a more manageable texture.

I encourage all to stay away from the "professional beauty product" aisles even in places like CVS and Target. JUST SAY NO!! These products are not being sold from salon professionals as it says they legally should be. These products can be spoiled/corrupted (one woman came into the old salon I worked at and expected to return a Paul Mitchell product she purchased at a drugstore that literally smelled like manure...no exaggeration here) and your salon professionals are trained on a regular basis as to how certain products can be used or combined (some products can conflict with other products). In addition, the ingredients could be way off from the original. For your health and safety, please stay away from diverted products.

Smoker's Delight

Since we are amidst party season, I thought it be appropriate to discuss something that can be a bit stanky...Parties can be smoke central.

If you're not a smoker or your lover has distaste for the smell, you're usually looking for a way to smother the stench. If you don't have time for a nice clean shower, and you realize that perfume only adds to the smoke (sorry smokers, but sometimes coconut flower peach cotton candy apple blossom sugar caca just doesn't mix well) there's a trick some of my co workers have let me in on:

A product called Fast Fix by Catwalk is a Leave In conditioner that evens out porosity of the hair AND it eliminates the smoker odor! Use it on your hair, clothes, and anywhere else and it is a miracle worker. The best thing about it is it's unisex, so it's great for the boys too. ;D

Since it's the first true snow of the season here in RI, I think it may be appropriate to discuss a winter woe...STATIC:

If you're having trouble with this dry weather and are having some serious hair-static issues, please do not proceed with rubbing a dryer sheet all over your hair. Please. Instead, try Bed Head's Spoil Me. It's a fine mist product that both reduces static and is a style refresher. So while you eliminate the fly aways, you also refresh some of the existing product in your hair...that way you don't have to keep adding more weight to your hair with some of those heavier styling aids.

Also, If you're still having trouble with those fly aways near your part on the surface of your hair, try spraying a tissue with hair spray, and then glide it over your 'do... And if you're someone who has that nice little trouble spot...you know, the one right at your hairline smack dab at the part...spray some hairspray directly between your thumb and pointer finger and glide and pinch those hairs into place.

I recently read an article in a beauty magazine that proclaimed, "The Side Part is Back!" Well, as a stylist, its my job to inform you that it should never have left. A center part is only a match for ONE face shape out of six, and that's oval. So if you're a diamond, heart, square, oblong, or round, please keep the comb away from the center!

Fight the Frizz

Rain, rain go away!!

Having trouble fighting the frizz from all of this moisture? Or maybe it's just irritating when your freshly, perfectly placed 'do falls apart after one foot out the door... Instead of going against the grain, try embracing the weather.

I'm not exactly the fan of wet styling (letting your hair air dry)...very few can pull this off while still looking neat and put together. If you are one of the few, power to you my friend!

My alternative: Grab that diffuser! It's my best friend when the weather's not in my favor! It gives me a natural curl that I am able to just scrunch back into place after meeting the blessings of mother nature.

For those of you who don't know what a diffuser is, it's a wonderful attachment that goes on the end of your hair dryer that enhances your natural curl when paired with the right products.(This is what a diffuser looks like)

Ok, I know a few of you are saying, "But Heather, my hair doesn't have a natural curl." While there ARE a very FEW hair types out there that this will do no justice for, the majority of people DO have a natural curl that they just have not tapped into. I never would've guessed I had a natural wave in my hair if no one enlightened me with this technique.

How to do it best:

-Hair should be totally saturated! This is the best tip I ever heard...It keeps the curls from separating too much through the blow dry

-Curl defining products REALLY help the process! I use Bed Head's Curls Rock... I like the creams best because they allow for a softer texture...No one wants the "Cranston Crunch" so if you're using gel, make sure you don't use too much! Anyway, put the product in your hands, rub together and gently scrunch into hair, being aware as to not separate the hair too much...try not to run your fingers through, just scrunching.

-Set your Blow dryer on low and leave it there! If the dryer is blowing your hair too much, hello frizzies, curl separation, and sad face :'( Depending on length of hair and hair density, this may mean you're going to be drying for a while, but if you want to see some happy curls it's worth it...I like to do a little internet surfing or watching the news while I'm waiting.

-Don't touch the hair too much...the more you touch it the more likely it's to again: SEPARATE and frizz.eek.

-After drying, if your curls seem too together or a little flat, flip upside down and shake your head about....do the hokey pokey and....no, no seriously though, giving your hair a quick shake will allow your curls to separate naturally, and avoid stretching the curls out.

-To finish, use a Hairspray with a flexible hold. I like to use S Factor's Vivacious hairspray. A flexible hold allows your curls to remain bouncy and avoids that CRRUNCH we were talking about earlier. Aerosol's are my favorite type of hairspray. They have a finer mist which means when you spray it on at an appropriate distance, you'll be able to avoid re-saturating your newly coiffed 'do like you might with non-aerosols.

For those of you who have been avoiding aerosols because of their history to be environmentally damaging, you'll be happy to know there are a WIDE variety of aerosols available that are deemed environmentally safe! Try Bed Head's Masterpiece or Aveda's Air Control.

The Final Look: Flirty, natural curl, that can be worn a little messy and easily scrunched back into place throughout the day...
